Tung Oil: Gilly’s
Description
Tung oil is a natural oil extracted from the seeds of the tung tree. Slightly more viscous than Hemp Oil, It has been used for centuries as a wood finish, due to its water-resistant, durable, and protective properties. Here are some of the uses of tung oil for wood:
- Protects and seals wood: Tung oil can penetrate deep into the wood, protecting it from moisture and preventing it from drying out or cracking.
- Enhances the natural beauty of wood: Tung oil can bring out the natural color and grain patterns of wood, giving it a rich, warm look.
- Durable: Tung oil is a very durable finish that can resist wear and tear, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.
- Easy to apply: Tung oil is easy to apply, either by hand or with a sprayer, and it dries quickly, so you can apply multiple coats in a single day.
- Resistant to mold and mildew: It has natural anti-fungal properties, which can help prevent mold and mildew from growing on wood surfaces.
- Low VOC: It is a low-VOC (volatile organic compound) finish, which means that it is better for the environment and for your health than some other types of wood finishes.
Overall, this oil can be a great option for protecting and enhancing the beauty of wood, while also being durable and environmentally friendly.
Application
Before applying, make sure the surface is clean and dry. You can use turpentine for a vigorous clean, or an all-purpose cleaner for a lighter clean. Any oil, wax, grease, or dirt residue may affect the tung oil’s ability to cure, so a thorough clean is important.
To apply on Raw Timber, mix the oil with a natural citrus solvent at a 50/50 ratio. Rub or brush the oil into the timber, using lighter coats. Let the oil sit for 5 minutes. Wipe on more oil to areas that become dull as the oil soaks in. Wipe off the excess oil, then lightly sand back while still damp, using 320 grit or finer. Apply 3 coats, repeating the same procedure, with a 24-hour wait time between coats. Apply more coats if desired or necessary. Hang out any rags or soak in water.
Tung oil takes 24 hours to dry between coats and can take up to 4 weeks to completely cure. Light usage is fine during this time frame.
For general maintenance and wear, reapply 1-2 light coats every 6-12 months to keep your timber looking fresh.
Clean Up with Mineral turpentine. Warm, soapy water for hand washing.
